Friends Turn Redundancy Into A Business Opportunity

Swindon surveyors set up new company to help homeowners become more energy efficient

Two friends who were made redundant from a large energy company have taken the plunge to set up their own business – Green Deal Measures.

And their unique selling point is that for many homeowners, the cavity wall and loft insulation they offer, can be provided free of charge.

“It sounds incredible – but it’s true,” said Allan, who lives in Swindon.

“At the moment, the big energy companies have to meet targets in providing insulation for older properties, but they’ve not met those targets yet. If they don’t, they could face huge fines. We’re Swindon-based surveyors who are able to visit your home and offer this service.”

After being made redundant a few months ago, Andy and Allan decided to turn adversity to their advantage.

They formed a partnership with insulation specialist Warm Space where they survey a property, bring in the company to carry out the work, often within a two-week period.

“People often don’t realise this opportunity exists, especially for homes which are at least ten years old. Going direct to an insulation company could involve costs, but if your property qualifies we can often get the work done without it costing a penny."

Many homes eligible

“We’ve recently insulated a large number of homes in the Rushy Platt estate off the Wootton Bassett Road. These detached homes are about 15 years old and all homeowners had the work done free of charge,” Andy, who lives in Wroughton, said.

It’s believed many homes in the SN5 and SN25 post code areas could be eligible for the free insulation currently available. Most very new homes, up to five years, will have cavity wall and loft insulation as standard.

In the long term, Andy & Allan will help homeowners benefit from the proposed Green Deal which is included in the Energy Bill going through Parliament.

Under the Green Deal, it’s proposed residents will be able to install expensive energy efficiency measures at home – such as solar panels or more energy efficient boilers – and gradually pay off upfront costs on their bills over time.
